Massimo Battaglia, biomedical researcher at the
Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche.

Birthplace and year of birth: Pisa, Italy, 1948. Married since 1981 with Mariella Masselli, geriatrician; one son, Luca, born in 1988.

Medical degree: 110/110 cum laude (i.e., full honors), University of Rome (Italy) School of Medicine, 25 June 1974.

Licensed to medical practice (Italy) at the University of Rome School of Medicine in January 1975.

Since March 1976, working as an Italian National Research Council (CNR) established investigator, first at the "Centro CNR Virus Respiratori", Rome (Italy), a clinical virology lab where he was introduced in late 1973. Research activity in the period March 1976-April 1979 mainly on: applications of immunofluorescence to rapid viral diagnosis, with special reference to the detection of human respiratory syncytial virus antigens in nasopharyngeal secretions; seroepidemiology of measles in Italy; development of a single radial hemolysis technique for the measurement of antibody to reovirus.

From May 1979 to May 1981, on leave of absence from the "Centro CNR Virus Respiratori" at the Virus Laboratory, Institute of Infectious Diseases, University of Pavia (Italy). Research activity: antigenic and biological relationships between human and animal coronaviruses; study of the enteropathogenic role of human enteric coronavirus; studies on the immunological reactivity of early antigens induced by human adenoviruses in cell cultures.

From June 1981 to December 1983 again at the "Centro CNR Virus Respiratori". Research activity: adaptation of human rotavirus strains to growth in cell cultures; detection, subgrouping and serotyping of human rotavirus strains; development of ELISA techniques for detection and subgrouping of rotavirus and for serotyping of herpes simplex virus isolates.

From January 1984 to October 2000 at the "Istituto CNR di Medicina Sperimentale", Rome (Italy). Research activity: development and virological applications of immunochemical and immunocytochemical methods; study of the immunological reactivity of electrophoretically separated viral polypeptides; human elusive and fastidious viruses, including hepatitis C virus; surface treatments of cell culture plastics and biomaterials.

From May to October 1984, on leave of absence from the "Istituto CNR di Medicina Sperimentale" at the Department of Veterinary Medicine, University of Zurich (Switzerland). Research activity: study of the antigenic relationships between human and animal coronavirus strains using immunoblotting techniques, a project supported by research grants from the Swiss Sandoz Foundation and the Italian Fondazione Anna Villa Rusconi.

From May to October 1985, on leave of absence from the "Istituto CNR di Medicina Sperimentale" at the Virus Laboratory, Institute of Infectious Diseases, University of Pavia. Research activity: antigenic characterization of coronavirus and rotavirus strains at the level of individual viral polypeptides.

Since June 1988 "Primo Ricercatore", a higher level in the CNR investigator career, in Clinical and Experimental Medicine.

From November 2000 to June 2008 at the CNR Institute of Neurobiology and Molecular Medicine, Rome. Research activity: development, study and evaluation of Internet resources in biology and medicine; isolation and characterization of animal stem cells.

Since February 2001 he cooperates with the Institute of Cognitive Science and Technologies (ISTC) in the field of domain ontologies.

Officially retired since July 1, 2008.

Author of scientific publications in the fields of tissue culture and virology.

Member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Internet Society, Mensa Italia "The High I.Q. Society". Founding member of the Italian Chapter of the Internet Society.
